THE MAN WHO GREW HIS OWN AMAZON RAINFOREST

A corner of the Amazon that had been cleared and used as farmland has been restored to rainforest. The man who owns it, Omar Tello, gave up his job as an accountant and spent 40 years recreating this patch of pristine forest in Ecuador, stretching just a few hundred metres in each direction. He’s trying to encourage other landowners to do the same, so they can turn the tide of deforestation.

Carbon Engineering wants to address climate change by capturing and removing carbon dioxide straight from the air, in a process known as Direct Air Capture. The company is backed by Bill Gates — but also by the oil giants Chevron, BHP, and Occidental. Some say the tech must get to market however possible, while others remain skeptical that partnerships with oil and gas companies will actually lead us towards a greener future.
