HELPING PEOPLE PUT THE PLANET FIRST

BBC StoryWorks

The scene opens in New York. We see plastic waste at the side of the river, and a local volunteer, Sarah, collecting it. As she works, she explains what motivates her to try to do her bit for the environment. The film follows Sarah going about her daily life in Manhattan. She introduces herself as a law student who wants to make greener choices wherever possible in her everyday life, but it’s not always easy – especially when it comes to cosmetics products. Meanwhile we hear from designers at P&G Beauty – how their wish to fight plastic waste and help consumers improve their recycling habits has led to their creation of intuitive refillable packaging for one of their most famous subsidiary brands, Olay, and further, their partnership with Terracycle.

Terracycle founder Tom Szaky explains that most people want to do more to help save the world, but sometimes you need to meet them halfway and make it as easy as possible in order to achieve behaviour change at the greatest scale. His ‘Loop’ initiative is doing just that, delivering people’s favourite products direct to their door and collecting the empty containers when they’re done, ready to be cleaned and repurposed. ‘Loop’ tries to replace the idea of ‘waste’ with a circular approach to packaging; materials that were previously too difficult to recycle are now used again and again for the same thing. We see our volunteer, Sarah, using the ‘Loop’ system, and finding it a success.
